NaNoWriMo: Week The First (A Strong Start!)

So, the first (work) week of NaNoWriMo is past! It started on a Monday this year, which is either a great blessing or a great curse, depending on your personal life schedules. For me, it was great, since I do most of my writing in the office. I like an actual desk and keyboard, so sue me.

God I wish I had a maneki-neko at my desk. At least I have a cat calendar, and a cat pen, and a cat poster, and a cat desktop background, and a—

And, not to brag, but it’s been a pretty good week for me. As of Friday morning, I’m sitting at a pretty little 15.5k. My personal goal is always to aim for 2k a day, so I can build a buffer in case of Thanksgiving (or other) issues, though admittedly that’s more for my younger years. I don’t really do Thanksgiving anymore outside of playing whatever game decided to release this year during my writing month. (It’s Pokémon, again, this year. But I also just got back into Animal Crossing New Horizons since the 2.0 update released early…)

Anyway, I’ve been blessed with some beautiful wordcounts—including over 5k both the first and second. I genuinely do write well in an office space! Last year, I broke 70k by the end of the month, and my own personal record by a good chunk, and I only wrote on weekdays. If my life ever changes away from an office setting, my writing career will go up in smoke.

Of course, on the flip side, Wednesday I had a dental appointment in the early afternoon. Because I’m a pile of anxiety at all things dentist-related, they’ve prescribed me Xanax, which is also hilarious because they’re a dentist. Of course, I still had a wordcount to meet, so that mostly just meant writing while under a very gooey drug influence. (I’m happy to report that I only noticed 2 mistakes, and the 1k words I wrote while under the influence are completely useable!)

I’ve written while drunk before, and it comes out pretty well, so maybe that says something about my writing style. Or maybe I’m just such a damn good writer. I like to think the latter. (Please, only write in times you feel comfortable doing it. That’s my Sailor Says of the month.)

I don’t know if I’ll meet my personal wordcount goals—or even the default ones—on the weekend. There’s Animal Crossing to play, laundry to do, distractions everywhere, and an actual socialization time on Sunday (I know, during November? But it’s hot pot, and I’m a slut for hot pot). But I’m beautifully ahead, and plan to stay that way.

(I’m sure this will be a hilarious in hindsight post if I crash and burn later in the month.)
